My footsteps slow as I near the room. Avery’s voice floats out into the hall. I can’t really hear what she’s saying, but Jacob giggles. A grin pulls at the corners of my mouth. I want to talk to her again and see if she responds with more than just a smile. It’s not that I mind her usual engaging smile that seems to instantly turn me to mush; it’s just that I love to hear the sound of her voice.

“Hey, Avery,” I say as I walk into Jacob’s room.

She looks up at me with those hauntingly beautiful blue-gray eyes. Her dark hair glistens in the sunlight cascading through the window, highlighting the deep shades of red. Her smile dims a bit, and I feel a profound sense of sadness radiating from her. I just can’t quite shake the feeling that she’s constantly on edge around me. I just wish I knew why.

Avery remains quiet, barely acknowledging that I’m even there. I know she was just talking to Jacob right before I entered the room, so I wonder why she won’t talk to me. Maybe her foul mood is because of something I’ve done and has nothing to do with last night at all. The thought of me upsetting her in some way puts me into a panic. “How are you?” I ask, trying to strike up a conversation.

Her eyes go to the floor and dart left and right as if she’s trying to decide. I wonder what’s going on in that pretty little head of hers. She opens her mouth, but closes it almost immediately. I can see the tears in her eyes as she runs out of the room. I look at Jacob, and he just shrugs.

I dart into the hall and see Avery disappearing into the break room. I follow her, catching the door before it can close. Her back is to me, and she’s slumped over the sink with her hands gripping the counter. “Avery,” I say as the door shuts behind me.

She immediately straightens her spine, and it reminds me of what she does on the beach after she’s let out all of her emotions. It’s as if she’s rebuilding a hard exterior around herself that no one can penetrate. “I’m sorry,” she says so low it’s barely above a whisper.

She’s sorry? For what? I don’t even know what she’s apologizing for. Confused, I walk over to her. “Hey, if I did something to offend you, just tell me.” I’m behind her now. She’s staring straight ahead out the small window above the sink. Her breathing is shallow, and her shoulders are bunched up around her ears from being so tense. “Did I do or say something wrong? Is that why you’ve been avoiding me? Is that why you won’t talk to me?” I’m asking a lot of questions, but I’m desperate to know the answers. There is some kind of connection between us, and I need to know that I’m not imagining it. I just want her to tell me that she feels the same way. Even if it’s just friendship, I’ll take it. I just want to help her with whatever it is she’s dealing with.

She turns and looks at me for a fraction of a second, but it’s long enough to see a million emotions flash behind those piercing eyes. She steps around me to leave. She’s always running away, but I’m not going to let her today. I’m going to get to the bottom of this right here, right now. “Wait a minute,” I say as my hand darts out and grasps her wrist in a firm, but gentle grip.

Crying out in pain, she jerks away from me quickly. In the process of pulling away, the sleeve of her cardigan slides up her arm, revealing purplish-blue marks on her exposed skin. Even though I don’t want to frighten or upset her, I reach out and gently pull the sleeve up a little more. I quickly inspect her skin before she pulls away. She has bruises the whole length of her forearm. Some are fresh, and some are old based on their color. My brows furrow as I meet her gaze. “Who did this to you?”

Her eyes are wide as she looks up at me, and I realize I just saw something I wasn’t ever supposed to see. “I…I fell,” she says, her voice catching.

She’s lying right to my face. Those bruise patterns are not from a fall. And I bet if I placed my fingers over the elongated bruises around her wrist, they would almost match. What is she trying to cover up? Who is she trying to protect?

Why I Write (Blog Hop)

I’ve been tagged in a ‘Blog Hop’.

Title: Why I Write

Matt Cairns, a fellow author on Twitter, @mattcairns73, kindly invited me to participate in this blog hop. Matt Cairns published a novel, Cold Blooded, in 2013.  Cold Blooded is an action thriller/horror novel with elements of the supernatural.  Check out Matt Cairns’ novel “Cold Blooded: A Thriller” here.

Okay, so how does a Blog Hop work?

*         Well, it’s like a game of tag, but on Twitter.

*         Once you’re tagged, you need to write a post on your blog about why you write. (Feel free to use the same kind of format as I have in this post.)

*          Make sure you link back to the person who tagged you.

*          Nominate and tag three (or more) people via Twitter to be next in the ‘hop’. (Make sure you contact them so they know.)

So, on with the blog…

Why I Write

Why do I write?  The answer is quite simple:  to escape.

I developed a love for books at a very young age.  I found myself reading whatever I could get my hands on.  Growing up poor and introverted, books were always my friends when I didn’t feel like I had any.

Along with a love for reading came an affinity for writing.  I can remember writing poems and song lyrics when I was a child.  Shortly thereafter, the poetry transitioned into short stories and eventually novels when I was a teen.  The first novel I ever wrote was, of course, about vampires.  Back in the ’90s, vampires were quite prevalent, and I devoured anything vampire related.  So it was only natural that my first novel that I published, Vampire Next Door, would be, in fact, about vampires.

I have always loved the idea that books can transport us to places we’ve never been.  We meet people we could never meet in real life.  We are able to experience a myriad of emotions and relish in triumphs and defeats by just simple words strung together into sentences.  And we can live vicariously through a number of different characters and, in a sense, become them for the length of the book.  I always wanted to create that kind of magic with words, and I am finally living my ultimate dream — being a published author.  With a deep-rooted need to escape of my own, I love creating worlds for other people to escape to as well.

Why do I write?  Because if I didn’t, I wouldn’t have a purpose. I live to write.  It has always been like that for me and always will be.  Even if I never publish another book again, I would still write for myself, as I had been doing for years before publishing my first novel.  I have so many more books, characters and universes that I can’t wait to share with everyone.  And as all writers are very aware of, the voices never stop — the characters are always there, waiting for you to tell their story.

I write for the same reason I breathe – because if I didn’t, I would die.” – Isaac Asimov

TAG! You’re it…

So here’s the point where I nominate other writers for the ‘hop’, so they too can answer the question: Why do I write?  I nominate as follows:

Setta Jay, @SETTAJAY_, author of The Guardians of The Realms Series

Lane Hart, @WritingfromHart, author of Blood Drive

C.E. Black, @CEBlackBooks, author of Shifted Perceptions

Garrard Hayes, @garradhayes, author of Bourbon and Blood

Daniel Kaye, @DanielKaye_, author of dark fiction vampire novel I, Vladimir

Eddie Jose Morales, @morales_ej, short story horror fiction writer

T.W. Barton, @TyWadeBooks, author of the upcoming iVigilante series and book reviewer.  (He supports a LOT of indie authors!)

Review for Vampire Next Door by My Bookshelf Is Yours

Léatitia over at My Bookshelf Is Yours reviewed Vampire Next Door.  I am very honored to say she gave it a five-star rating!

Here is a little preview of her review:

Vampire Next Door is the story of a woman left for dead who wakes up from a coma. She has no memory of her past and is called « Jane Doe » since no one came for her. Scared and broken, she quickly understands she never was alone thanks to her doctor, Jack Walker. At the beginning of the book, Jane Doe is lucky and loved, and after months of being in a hospital, she finally is happy. She had found her balance. But unfortunately, tragedy strikes again and she is once again lost and broken. But something or should I say someone arrives and gives her something to smile for. Here he is : Sebastian Alexander, her mysterious and handsome neighbor, living next door, who seems to have some secrets of his own. Jane is falling for him but at the same time, she is confused by how this new man in her life is capable of getting her so quickly, always here when she needs someone so bad. She also starts to wonder if he is really a stranger or someone she could rely on to find out who she was before the « accident » and above all, who wants her dead.

First I have to say, I love vampire stories and movies so I was really excited to read Vampire Next Door. But maybe I should warn you, this is not a novel 100% about vampires. I mean, the way I understand and love the plot makes me think this novel is more than just about a sexy and dangerous vampire. I loved the pace of this novel, which I found was different from what I usually read, and loved the characters. This is the kind of books I’m beginning to love more and more each time I read one like Vampire Next Door. There are actions, romance ( oh yeah!), humor and suspense. It is a really an efficient writing that made my reading active and amazing. Sure, it’s a slow process to get to know the main character. And I also wanted to know more about this mysterious visitor. But then characters like Jack Walker are here and we get to know Jane through his eyes. And it’s something I really appreciated. Something else I enjoyed is how easy I felt close to Jane. Who wouldn’t feel sad about her ? But who wouldn’t want to take her place at some point too ?

Léatitia then goes on to break down the characters in the book, their traits and what she liked about each one.  What a review!  And don’t worry, Léatitia, I am planning a sequel some day! 😉

Please visit her blog for many more book reviews, and make sure you check out the post on Vampire Next Door.

Review by Run & Read That

Sherry over at Run & Read That posted a review of Vampire Next Door yesterday.  I thought I would share it with all of you and link over to her site, so that you can check out her other reviews and the rest of her blog.

You can find the review here and also read it down below.  A big thank you to Sherry for writing a review on Vampire Next Door.  I’m glad you enjoyed it! 😉

Vampire Next Door by Angela Snyder

(Review from Run & Read That)

“What can I say about this novel by Angela Snyder besides it was pretty darn good?!?! I was pleasantly surprised at how this novel grabbed my attention and held on to it until the very last page. I have had case of book hangover after reading about the life and loves of Jane Doe, the heroine of the story. The novel begins with a hunter finding an unconscious woman in the woods with no identification and once she awakens after being in a coma for three weeks, she doesn’t have a single memory of the life she lived before her mysterious accident.

Fortunately for her, she is cared for by a very compassionate man Dr. Jack Walker whom she begins to rely on to get her through her recovery as her only friend. However, she cannot shake the occasional feeling that being watched. But luckily for her and us the readers, she is being watched by the sexily mysterious Sebastian Alexander, who only wants her happy.

Nevertheless, the relationship between Jane Doe & Dr. Walker grows, they get married and it appears a happily ever after is on the horizon until tragedy strikes again. Dr. Walker is mugged and killed on or around their anniversary. As Jane is slowly recovering from her loss,  the mysterious Sebastian moves into the house next door. She feels a pull in his direction however; she is being dragging in another direction by her deceased husband’s twin brother. Now, I just thought that was a bit creepy and fortunately for me, I wasn’t the only one because the thought never quite sat right with Jane.

This book had its fair share of suspense, drama, and swoon worthy moments without reading like the cliché paranormal vampire novel. Not that I have read all that many, it was not overdone; just enough for you to know that a vampire was in the storyline. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves a good and well developed story that moves over time as in years and months instead of days and weeks. Well done Ms. Snyder!”

Sherry’s reviews are honest and funny, so definitely check out her blog!
